Installing Chatzilla

Option 1: Firefox Add-On (Easy)

Install Chatzilla as an add-on to your Firefox browser. One of the main downsides is that Chatzilla would restart or close depending on whether you close Firefox.

Option 2: Standalone version (Medium)

You will need to download Chatzilla and XULRunner, available for Windows, Mac OS X (Universal), and Linux (x86).

    Windows/Linux

    1. Extract the XULRunner archive. Open a terminal window and use cd to switch to the XULRunner directory.
    2. Run xulrunner --register-global to register the install location.
    3. Run xulrunner --install-app <package>, where <package> is the path to the ChatZilla .zip file.
    4. Start ChatZilla, which is installed in Program Files or /usr/lib depending on your OS..

    Mac OS X

    1. Download
    2. Install XULRunner to /Library/Frameworks/XUL.Framework.
    3. Open a terminal window and run /Library/Frameworks/XUL.framework/xulrunner-bin --install-app <package>, where <package> is the path to the ChatZilla .zip file.
    4. Start ChatZilla in your Applications folder.

If you need to copy over settings or scripts, use the ChatZilla command /pref profilePath to find your profile.

    • To join more channels besides #ocf, type: /j #whateverchannelname
    • To leave a channel, type: /leave. Or you can right-click on the channel's tab and select the option to leave.
    • To send private messages to a user, type: /msg theirusername yourmessage, or you can right-click on the name in the list.
      • You can also open a new tab beforehand by typing: /query theirusername, although Chatzilla will automatically separate private messages into their own tab.
    • To change the topic, either click the topic box on the top to start editing, or type: /topic Whatever topic is appropriate
    • To leave completely, type: /quit. To put a custom departing message as you leave, type: /quit Goodbye message of your choice. (You can also set your default quit message in Preferences.)

For settings of appearances, sounds, scrollbacks, logs, and other customization and configuration, look under Preferences. And as a general rule, please don't abuse the channel, and try to be courteous to others. Enjoy!
